The upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, dubbed "the Great North American Eclipse is a BIG FREAKING DEAL. Imagine the last episode of your beloved TV series happening on Monday—that's this year's total solar eclipse. Miss out, and you'll be waiting 20 years for America's next grand celestial display!
With the calendar showing no signs of a U.S. total eclipse until 2044 and 2045, the tears can start flowing now 😭. The demand has sent the travel industry into a frenzy, with early birds booking hotels, Airbnbs, and chartered flights months in advance. It's set to eclipse the Super Bowl's fame in excitement and participation.
Travelers seek more than a place to stay; they want a memorable experience. Cities and towns on the eclipse's path are becoming centers of cosmic viewing parties.
Russellville, Arkansas is hosting a festival called “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” featuring a mass wedding for 300 couples. Wonder if Bonnie Tyler’s warming up her vocal cords for this one? 🎤 🤔
It’s such a big event for the travel industry. And there are so many different sectors that are able to make money off this.
🏨 🏕️ Booking sites embraced the opportunity. Priceline launched a page for flight and hotel bookings. Campspot and Hipcamp also created pages to book campsites in the eclipse zone. As expected, the demand for campsites reached lunar levels.
💰 🌒 Billion-dollar impact expected. April 8th may eclipse a billion dollars to travel-related companies and local economies in states within the path of totality.
👀 🛩️ 30,000ft view… Many airlines (Southwest, United, Delta, JetBlue) and *ahem, Alaska offered special flights to view the eclipse. Tickets vanished within 24 hours, commanding prices over $1,000 for a one-way trip. $1K for a 4-minute celestial show – talk about premium sky entertainment.

An estimated 900,000 - 3.5 million people will travel to states that have a path of totality, such as Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

From Texas to New York, state governments have declared emergencies to prepare for the influx of tourists. Their aim is to ensure safety, manage traffic, and handle service disruptions. Both air travel and driving face significant challenges across various states.
Air travel, already intense due to Spring Break, expect crowded airports and long security lines. Air traffic delays are likely, alongside more drones in the sky.
Driving conditions will be tough, with states issuing travel warnings for expected traffic surges. Highways along the eclipse's path may be congested and hazardous.
Having a total solar eclipse pass through the U.S. is kind of like having 20 or 30 Super Bowls happening all at once
For short-term rental hosts, it’s the jackpot of a lifetime. Occupancy rates have skyrocketed to unseen heights in states along the eclipse's path. To put it in perspective, back in February, Airbnb reported a surge of 1000%.
